TREK ROUTE TO CORDILLERA HUAYHUASH – PERÚ
CORDILLERA HUAYHUASH RANGE PERU.
Most of the trekkers that come to the Huayhuash range choose to cover the distance of 165 Km of the circuit by foot. There are various options for this circuit.
START AT CHIQUIAN VILLAGE
This is one of the most well-known itineraries in the Huayhuash range. From Chiquian, the circuit is done by bus through zig-zag roads and valleys, canyons to the villages of Pocpa y Palca, Roquia, Matacancha, Cuartelhuain, etc., to Cacananpunta Pass (4750 m). From this pass are visible the highest summits of this range, and to the NE the mountain range that leads to Chaupijanca Massif, part of Huallanca Range.
We are then at the head of Janca Valley, situated in the eastern part of Huayhuash, a gentle and open valley, where local people make delicious cheese, well known in the region. From here, we reach the lakes of Mitucocha and Barrosococha, on the lower part of Ninashjanca and Rondoy, of an exceptional beauty. We then ascend to a pass in the proximity of snow capped peaks of Jirishjanca, Santa Rosa and Yerupaja. Following the trail towards SW, we cross Carnicero Grande pass and descend towards Ararag (4800 m), and towards a lake called Viconga. From this place we can continue to Cajatambo, 20 Km SW, but this route is not well transited. Local legends say that long time ago, Viconga was a beautiful town, that was transformed in a lake by God's punishment, due to its lack of hospitality towards travelers. From the left side of Ararag we continue towards the western side of the Cordillera, avoiding crossing Pumarinri and Huayllapa (Cajatambo) Valleys. We ascend from Viconga to Cuyoc Pass (5000 m), and then descend to Huayllapa through Guanaypatay Valley. We can visit Viconga, or alternatively follow a shortcut from Ararag to Cuyoc, at the base of Puscanturpa peak. There is another trail, more difficult, that traverses at the southern side of Nevado Huayhuash, and then at the base of Nevado Shutogjanca, descending through Calinca Valley to Huayllapa. From here, we climb through Segya valley, which is the access route to Nevados Caramarca, Juitushuarco, Huacrish, Tsacra, Rasac, Yerupaja and Siula.
To reach the valley where Jahuacocha and Solterococha Lakes are found, we can start from Huayllapa through difficult terrain, before entering Jahuacocha Valley, to Tapush Pass (4800 m) and Yaucha Pass (4600 m), returning to Solterococha, at the end of the valley. Approximately 10 Km below Achín River is Pacllón, the capital of the district with the same name. From this point to Chiquián there are 10 km, which conclude the circuit. Pacllon is well known for local musicians that play traditional Andean folklore. At the same time, it is a good place to enter the valley where the lakes of Jahuacocha and Solterococha are found, at the southern side of Nevado Yerupaja, behind Carhuacocha Lake.
On both mountain sides we find clear rivers which host plenty of trout, garzamora and gaviotas. This circuit of 165 Km around Huayhuash is one of the trekking routes most spectacular in the world, for its landscape. While this circuit requires 12 days and crossing 5 high altitude passes, its beauty is highly worth the effort.
